William T. Price Proposition
- What is the main action about?
- The middle of the plot must contain an occurrence that in some way leads logically to the end of the plot.
- The beginning of the plot contains an occurrence which forms the root of this middle action.
This translates to…
- the condition of the action is the first significant event of the play, the event which holds the root of the cause of the action.
- the cause of the action is the event which follows from the condition of the action, and which raises a question which the rest of the play must answer.
- the resulting action will answer the question raised by the cause of the action, the question which is the chief business of the plot.
Why focus on event?
- The condition of the action cannot be a situation; it must be an event. A situation is static.
- Condition must describe only what happens in the play. A situation existed before the beginning of the plot of this play and thus, is useless.
The proposition always deals with events in which both the central and second characters are concerned. To ensure this of happening, one must get in the habit of putting the central character as the subject of the sentences.
